April 17--Firefighters may have a reputation for saving cats from trees, but Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue didn't duck out when a dozen ducklings went down the drain Tuesday.
Two boys noticed the ducks in a storm drain around 5:30 p.m. near Northwest 25th Terrace and Northwest Second Street in unincorporated central Broward. They heard peeping coming from three drains that were connected by a pipe, fire rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said.
Capt. Omar Valiente and firefighter Randy Chidester used a hose to flush the ducklings from the pipe into a storm drain, where they could be safely retrieved, he said.
The two firefighters put the frightened fowl in a box then returned the ducklings to their mother, who was waiting patiently nearby, Jachles said.
Residents are encouraged to be careful near storm drains and to call for help if they come upon a stranded animal, he said.
