May 02--NEWPORT NEWS -- A 4-year-old child was taken to a Newport News hospital Wednesday night after being rescued from a burning apartment in the Southeast section of the city.
Firefighters discovered the victim in a second floor bedroom of a two-story apartment in the 600 block of 16th Street, said J. Douglas Carper II, a spokesman for Newport News Fire Department, in an email.
Fire crews arrived at the apartment at about 10:30 p.m. and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the apartment. Police alerted fire crews that there was a child in an upstairs bedroom that they had been unable to rescue because of the heavy smoke and heat inside the residence, Carper said. Firefighters located the child during a search of home, Carper said.
The child was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, Carper said. A police officer was also treated for minor smoke inhalation, Carper said.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
