June 03--A goose nesting on the Dan River under the wooden pedestrian/bicycle bridge behind the Carrington Pavilion got itself into trouble Sunday and was rescued by the Danville Fire Department.

Paulette Dean, executive director of the Danville Area Humane Society, said they got a call about a goose that had gotten its head trapped between some logs and went to investigate.

Dean called the Bridge Street fire station and asked for help, and firefighters quickly responded. With backup stationed both up- and down-river, Capt. E.D. Turpin and Firefighter J.E. Stowe entered the river and waded out to where the goose was trapped; they moved enough of the debris and logs out of the way to free the goose.
