Sept. 18--HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Deputy Chief Kenny Stratton will serve as Darlington County's new fire chief.

Stratton, a firefighter since he was 15, has served as the interim chief since the retirement of Chief David Williamson at the end of last year. Stratton served as the fire chief in Lamar prior to joining the Darlington County Fire Department.

"I hope to instill pride in the department," said Stratton following the announcement of his hiring.

Darlington County Administrator Dale Surrett made the announcement Wednesday morning at a press conference held at the Headquarters Fire Station located in Hartsville. Local emergency response agencies were on hand for the announcement.

Darlington County Fire District is an ISO Class 5 volunteer fire department that is staffed by 138 volunteers and 10 paid support staff. They responded to 821 calls for service last year from 11 stations and four substations. The District operated 18 engines, 11 tankers, four brush trucks, two service units, one rescue unit and eight staff vehicles. The current year budget is $1.4 million.
