Oct. 01--NEWPORT NEWS -- Firefighters battled a blaze Monday night at an unoccupied commercial building in the 900 block of Jefferson Avenue, a spokesman said.

Fire crews were dispatched at about 11:50 p.m., and upon their arrival found flames coming from the one-story building, said Chief Kenneth Lay, a spokesman for the Newport News Fire Department, in a news release. The fire was brought under control at 12:12 a.m.

Firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading to the entire building, Lay said. There were no injuries in the fire, he said.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
