Man Shot by S.C. Deputy was Former County Fire Chief

Oct. 29--LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. -- The Lexington County Coroner's Office identified the man shot and killed by a Lexington County Sheriff's deputy Monday afternoon at a home in the Oak Grove community.
Wilmon L. Hutto, Jr., 71, died from extensive blood loss due to a gunshot wound, according to a news release from the Lexington County Coroner's Office.
Deputy Billy Womble, 33, arrived at the Mineral Springs home at about 1 p.m., investigating a call of shots fired, according to Sheriff James Metts.
When Womble encountered the man inside his home, Metts said the man pointed a gun at the deputy and threatened him. Womble fired his weapon, injuring the man. He later died.
The State Law Enforcement Division, has been brought in to investigate the incident, , as is typical in such cases Womble, who has been a deputy since 2001, has been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Hutto was a former Lexington County fire chief. When he retired in 2003, he was the chief at the county's Oak Grove and Pine Grove stations. Previously, he had been Lexington County's chief fire investigator and a firefighter in West Columbia.
Hutto's father and two uncles were firefighters in West Columbia, and he volunteered at 17, just after graduating from Brookland-Cayce High School.
