Nov. 12--BEVERLY -- A 23-year-old man was rescued by the Fire Department's Marine Rescue team after a group of four people decided to go for a swim off Mingo Beach and he couldn't make it back on his own, according to fire officials.

Deputy Chief Bill Petrosino said the department's rescue boat was launched after receiving a 911 call at 7:29 a.m.

The rescued man, who was not identified last night, had been treading water for about an hour. He was 200 to 300 yards out from shore, Petrosino said.

"He couldn't make it back on his own," Petrosino said. The rescue team threw a lifesaving ring to the struggling swimmer and pulled him into the boat.

Mingo Beach is off Route 127, across the street from Endicott College.

The man was transported to Beverly Hospital to be treated for hypothermia.

Petrosino recognized the four firefighters for their work in the rescue.

"Everything worked perfectly," he said.
