Nov. 16--A person was clinging to life after being pulled from a burning Wilson apartment early Saturday.

Firefighters rescued one victim from a 1706-A Queen St. East home, Cmdr. Jim Campbell of Wilson Fire and Rescue Services said. Officials didn't release a name at the scene.

The apartment in a small brick building at the end of Queen Street caught fire shortly after 3 a.m.

"Crews went in and we had heavy smoke coming out of the apartment," Campbell said. "They found one fire victim who is in critical condition."

Firefighters brought the person out and Wilson County paramedics began emergency first aid at the scene.

Police closed several blocks of Queen Street while firefighters sprayed down the apartment. Overhaul efforts were beginning around 4 a.m. Campbell said the cause was still under investigation.

Firefighters stood on the front steps of the apartment building as a thin stream of water bubbled from a nozzle on a nearby fire engine.
