Dec. 17--Mayfield Village has a new fire chief.
Serving as interim chief for the past six months, Eugene Carcioppolo has officially been appointed chief and was sworn in Monday night at the regular council meeting.
Honored and humbled to be named chief, Carcioppolo wants to maintain the high quality of service for the residents into 2014 and beyond.
"I want to continue our commitment to excellence and provide outstanding service to our community," he said.
Carcioppolo, 32, of Chester Township, started serving Mayfield Village as a part-time firefighter/paramedic in 2001.
In 2003, he was promoted to full-time firefighter.
"We are very comfortable and very confident that he will serve the community well," Mayfield Village Mayor Bruce Rinker said. "The residents need to know that the professionals that they have looking out for them 24/7 have someone who leads, and he is a true leader. I'm very happy and proud of him."
Carcioppolo is succeeding David Mohr, who served 33 years as fire chief for the village.
"It's not about the job title or the money," Carcioppolo said. "It's about giving back to the community."
The new chief has a bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati in fire and safety engineering technology and is working on his master's degree from Anna Maria College in public administration focusing on fire and rescue services.
Rinker said Carcioppolo was one of four considered for the position and scored the highest on the civil service test.
Carcioppolo served as a member on the Hillcrest Regional Rescue team for 10{ years, led the Public Fire Extinguisher Training Program starting in 2003 and assisted victims of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita for one month with FEMA in 2005, according to a news release from the village.
