A volunteer firefighter from Virginia has been charged with stealing a fire truck and crashing it last summer.
Kevin W. T. Burns, 27, is charged with grand larceny in connection with the theft.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Burns is accused of taking the Chesterfield fire truck from a county maintenance yard.
Police say he stole the fire truck from a county maintenance lot in the 9700 block of Lori Lane on July 20, 2013 as it was waiting a final check before being put into service by the airport.
Burns apparently hopped a fence, and got in the unlocked truck, then drove off with it, crashing through the fence and taking the truck on the 14-mile joyride before crashing it into a ditch, the paper reported.
The special operations foam truck was supposed to have been placed in service at the airport, fire officials told police.
Burns began working with Chesterfield Fire as a volunteer at Station 10 in December 2011, but was later terminated for an unrelated personnel issue, reporters noted, quoting fire officials.
