Jan. 15--A former Lincoln County fire chief was killed Tuesday evening when his car collided with an ambulance that was transporting a patient to the hospital.
Walter Manuel, 79, died at the scene, Lincoln County Coroner Farris Marcum said.
Manuel was chief of the Lincoln County Fire Department's Station One in the 1980s. He was retired.
The wreck occurred about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lancaster Street and U.S. 27 in Stanford, Marcum said.
The ambulance was traveling north on U.S. 27 with its siren and warning flashers, carrying a patient who was experiencing a "cardiac event," Marcum said.
Manuel apparently was leaving a nearby Dairy Queen, where he had been drinking coffee. He was a regular there, Marcum said.
The ambulance struck the driver's side of Manuel's car, Marcum said.
The crash remains under investigation.
