Feb. 22--FALMOUTH -- Firefighters returned an elderly dog to its owner late Friday after it was found wandering on the ice at Nyes Pond, according to a fire official.

The owner, who lives on Lantern Lane, off Main Street, reported just after 11 p.m. that the dog had gone through the ice, Fire Acting Deputy Chief Timothy Smith said.

Firefighters donned ice suits and searched the pond but ultimately found the dog walking on the ice, and they brought it back to shore, Smith said.

The dog, which is both deaf and blind, was returned to its owner, he said.

The call took about 20 minutes. "The owner was very grateful," Smith said.
