May 15--ROCKPORT, Maine -- Fire crews from four communities battled a fire early Thursday morning that destroyed the home of a lieutenant in the town's fire department.
There were no injuries, according to Rockport Fire Chief Jason Peasley.
The chief said Greg and Trina Rollins were awakened a few minutes after midnight by a smoke detector at their home on Rollins Lane, just off Route 17. The couple had to escape out the back door because the front porch was on fire, the chief said.
Greg Rollins is a lieutenant in the fire department and ran from his home to the nearby West Rockport fire station and drove a firetruck back to his house to begin trying to save his home. Meanwhile, his wife telephoned 911.
When crews arrived, the front porch was ablaze and the fire had caught onto the eves of the house.
The chief said the house is likely a total loss. The couple's cat also was able to escape without injury.
The house was insured.
The chief said the state fire marshall will make the final determination but it appears that an electrical box on the front of the house was the source of the fire.
Firefighters from Rockland, Warren and Hope assisted Rockport including bringing additional air bottles to aid crews. The crews were at the home for nearly five hours.
