"There was no access for us to get to the fire from the ground," Vallejo Battalion Chief Cliff Campbell said.

May 25--An afternoon Saturday blaze engulfed about two acres of vegetation on a strip of land north of State Route 37, Vallejo firefighters said.

The fire was reported at about 2:55 p.m. by commuters traveling on the highway, west of Mare Island.

However, responding firefighters soon realized that there was no access road to get to the burning vegetation, firefighters added.

The location of the blaze was identified with the assistance of a California Highway Patrol helicopter, and Vallejo firefighters requested Cal Fire helicopter to do "bucket drops" to extinguish the fire, firefighters said.

"There was no access for us to get to the fire from the ground," Battalion Chief Cliff Campbell said.

Cal Fire sent crew members via helicopter to work on the fire.

A Cal Fire firefighters sustained injuries and was airlifted to a Napa area hospital, Campbell added.

The fire was mostly extinguished by Saturday night, but there were still "hot spots" and the public could still see smoke through the night, Campbell said.

No structures were threatened by the blaze.
