June 09--CORPUS CHRISTI -- A man stole an ambulance from Christus Spohn Hospital Shoreline early Saturday and drove to the Southside, turning the emergency lights on and off before officers stopped him, police said.

A man told officers he left the ambulance with the engine running outside the hospital in the 600 block of Elizabeth Street about 2:30 a.m., according to a news release. When he came outside, he the saw the ambulance traveling on Morgan Avenue.

Officers located the vehicle traveling south on Kostoryz Road from South Padre Island Drive. The vehicle was weaving between lanes at a high rate of speed, police said.

They stopped the ambulance in the 5600 block of Liptonshire Street and arrested Joey Castro, 18, on suspicion of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, driving while intoxicated and resisting search after he resisted officers when he was being treated at a hospital. He was released Saturday from Nueces County Jail.

Police believe Castro also was responsible for damaging two mailboxes that were run over in the 3700 block of Prosper Street.
