Several fire departments in York County responded to a tractor trailer crash that caught fire and burned fuel and trash the truck was hauling.

June 11--YORK COUNTY -- Multiple fire departments and hazmat teams responded to a tractor-trailer fire on Commonwealth Drive near Kmart in York County.

York County Fire & Life Safety Assistant Chief Paul Long said the tractor-trailer was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived at about 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Long said firefighters could see heavy smoke coming from the blaze on their way to the scene and called the Newport News and Langley Air Force fire departments to assist.

Hazmat teams were called in due to the materials in the trash the trailer was carrying and fuel that had spread onto the roadway, Long said.

Firefighters had the blaze under control and fuel contained to the roadway in about 20 minutes, he said.

Commonwealth Drive is blocked off at Victory Boulevard, which may cause traffic delays, he said. Crews could be on the scene for several hours cleaning up and investigating the fire.

"It may be several days before we determine the cause," he said.
