"It's an old trick of ours," Buffalo Commissioner Garnell Whitfield said of the actions to get emergency vehicles closer to the scene.

June 27--Buffalo firefighters pulled a man from his second-floor burning apartment on Oxford Avenue early this morning.

The man, whose name was not released, was found unconscious on the second floor of the three and a half story building, fire officials said. The man was taken to Erie County Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. A Buffalo firefighter suffered burns to one arm and was treated and released from Erie County Medical Center.

Firefighters had to lift a car from the street and place it on the sidewalk so that bigger firefighting equipment could get into a better position to fight the blaze. Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell W. Whitfield Jr. said: "It's an old trick of ours. Ten or fifteen guys lifted the car and moved it a little bit at a time."

The blaze was confined to the second and third floor floors of the apartment house. Ten other people in the three-and-half story apartment house required temporary shelter from the Red Cross.

Damage to the building was estimated at $175,000 and damage to contents was estimated at $90,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
