Off-duty Ind. Firefighters Pull Driver from Fiery Crash

Oct. 26, 2015
The Rochester and South Bend firefighters were headed to a meeting when they saw the fiery crash.

They were a day late to a meeting, but that scheduling error lead them to rescue a woman from a head-on crash near Lebanon.

Darrell Eiler, a captain with South Bend Fire and Rochester Firefighter Kraig Smith were driving to a meeting Thursday when they witnessed the head-on collision between a car and tractor-trailer. The car rolled into a nearby field.

“I saw the smoke from the car getting thicker and darker, and I’m thinking: ‘We’ve got to get her out of the car because this thing is gonna go up in flames’,” Eiler told the South Bend Tribune.

When they got to the car, the driver said her foot was stuck.

“I guess our training took over and we did what we knew had to be done. It speaks volumes for our training” Eiler said.

Smith said he marked his calendar for a meeting on Thursday, but it ended up being Wednesday.

“It may have been the wrong day for us, but it was the right day for the woman in that car,” Smith said.
