A woman escaped the burning duplex, but firefighters rescued a 40-year-old man.

A man is in critical condition after being rescued from an early morning duplex fire in Indianapolis.

Firefighters found that a woman, 56, had escaped through a window when they arrived at the Rockleigh Avenue around 4:30 a.m. Monday. A 40-year-old man was still trapped inside.

"They pulled the individual from the home within minutes after arrival, so it was a quick knockdown on the fire and a quick removal of that individual who was trapped,” Wayne Township Fire Captain Michael Pruitt told Fox59.com.

The two were rushed to the hospital. The woman was in serious condition with smoke inhalation injuries.

The family living on the other side of the structure was able to escape without injury.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
