SHERMAN OAKS — An accident involving a Los Angeles Fire Department engine early this morning in Sherman Oaks knocked down wires that set a liquor store on fire, knocked out power to hundreds of customers and injured one firefighter.

The LAFD engine was involved in a traffic collision about 2:30 a.m. at 13700 Burbank Blvd. in the Sherman Oaks/Valley Glen area, department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said.

One firefighter was transported to a local hospital in serious condition, she said.

LAFD’s Engine 102 suffered what appears to be front-end damage, as seen in photos obtained by NBC4. The engine’s passenger-side windows was heavily damaged.

Live wires were in the street, and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews were attempting to de-energize them, Stewart said.

Burbank Boulevard near Woodman Avenue was expected to be closed for several hours as work continued on the live wires.

The fallen wires started a fire on the sign at a liquor store, and that blaze extended into the attic, Stewart said.

It took 40 Los Angeles firefighters 30 minutes to knock down the fire, she added.

At least 530 customers in the Sherman Oaks and Valley Glen areas were without power, according the LADWP web site, which gave noon today as the estimated time when power would be restored.

Power was still out as of 3:30 a.m.

According to emergency radio transmissions from the scene, at least six parked cars were damaged in the crash.
