Wash. Firefighters Enlarge Basement Window to Rescue Man

After enlarging the basement window, Spokane firefighters used a ladder to rescue the man.

A man trapped in the basement of a burning Spokane home was rescued by firefighters Saturday. 

Crews encountered heavy fire conditions from the home on West Heroy just after 12 p.m.  

The man’s hands and face were visible to firefighters from the basement, but he was unable to escape the fire through a small window, Spokane Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said.

Firefighters quickly enlarged the window and used a ladder to help the man escape.

The noise from the fire awoke the man, who works nights. Schaeffer the man's bedroom door was closed and that provided him with the extra time to escape.

The man was treated and released at the scene.

The cause of the, which was contained in 25 minutes, is under investigation.
