Over 100 firefighters were called to battle an inferno that consumed sprawling apartment complex under construction in Gilbert.
Officials said winds fanned the flames as they destroyed at least seven three-story buildings.
"The construction is in the wood frame stage," Gilbert Capt. Gary Hildebrandt told azcentral.com. It’s going to be exposed wood, so it’s going to burn hotter and faster, and with the winds kicking up, we had a hard time containing it right away."
A firefighter suffered minor burns and three police officers were treated for smoke inhalation, Hildebrandt said.
Area residents were evacuated as the blaze reached five alarms.
Embers were reportedly falling miles from the scene.
