Authorities said Hempfield woman in a wheelchair escaped her burning home late Saturday morning without injury thanks to a swift response from a Greensburg volunteer firefighter.

The identity of the woman was not immediately available.

Hempfield No. 2 volunteer Fire Department Capt. Michael Hutchinson said Greensburg firefighter Chet Bell was first on the scene when authorities received a 911 call of a fire at 4040 Thornton Ave.

Hutchinson said smoke from the kitchen fire was pouring from the home when Bell arrived. Bell got the woman to her front door where junior firefighter Cameron Hutchinson assisted in the rescue.

“We were able to knock down the fire pretty quickly,” Hutchinson said.

No damage estimates were available, but Hutchinson said the fire rendered the home uninhabitable.
