A Maryland firefighter is credited with saving a man threatening to jump off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Thursday morning.

The motorist's empty vehicle was spotted atop the eastbound span about 7 a.m.

The distraught man climbed over the railing and was sitting on a girder.

A harnessed firefighter gingerly climbed down beside him, and held onto him until they could be hoisted up.

Traffic headed to Maryland's Eastern Shore was snarled for more than an hour as the operation contunued.
