A million-dollar home in North Dallas was severely damaged after a 3-alarm blaze ripped through the house Thursday afternoon.

The fire broke out about 4:35 p.m. in the garage at a residence in the 10 block of Collinway Place, near Interstate 635 and Hillcrest Road.

When firefighters arrived, heavy fire was coming from the garage of the home. Firefighters had to get out of the house to attack the blaze from outside after the flames advanced into the attic and began to spread throughout the whole home, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said.

A woman was gardening in the backyard when she smelled smoke and went to tell her husband. He found fire coming from the garage and was exposed to the fire and smoke when he opened the door, he said.

Dallas Fire-Rescue transported him to an area hospital to be checked out, Evans said.

The fire was extinguished after more than two hours with the help of about 60 firefighters. The house may be totaled from the damage, he said.

Investigators said the fire originated in the garage, but the specific cause has not been confirmed. The three vehicles in the garage were damaged severely, if not totally.
