A retired Florida firefighter will be among those who perform at the presidential inauguration today.
John Fischer, who is retired from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, will play bagpipes during the parade at about 2 pm, he told the television station ABC25 WPBF News.
Fischer said he begin playing about 10 years ago not knowing anything about music, how to read it, or how to play it, he told the station.
Practice and courses help him achieve a level of expertise where he regularly plays during events and local parades including one that draws some 50,000 spectators.
But none have been as big as the estimated one million people on hand for Friday’s inauguration, the television station reported.
And for Fischer, it has nothing to do with politics. He told the television station he would have been honored to play for either the Republican or the Democratic candidate.
“It’s a proud, patriotic, bucket list item like no other,” he told the television station.
He said he had a call from the state’s first responder pipe band asking him to join the inauguration event and he instantly said yes.
“I am looking at this as if I’m playing for my country,” he said.
