The IN firefighter killed responding to a call on Christmas Eve last year was intoxicated and over the legal limit when the train struck his vehicle.
According to television station WTHR 13, Firefighter Richard Rehm had served 16 years as a volunteer firefighter with the McCordsville Fire Department. Toxicology reports indicate was he was under the influence of alcohol when his vehicle got stuck on the railroad tracks while responding to a call. A train subsequently struck the vehicle killing Rehm.
At the time of the crash, the television station reported Rehm was responding to an alarm activation at about 1 a.m. on Christmas Eve. He called dispatch to report his vehicle was stuck on the tracks and a short time later, there was a report the vehicle had been struck, the TV station reported. Rehm was pronounced dead at the scene.
Local police said in a statement issued yesterday to the television station indicating that their “thoughts and prayers remain with the family” and his fellow firefighters.
Rehm was survived by four adult children, a brother and his mother.
