Two FDNY firefighters teamed up to rescue a man from a Staten Island apartment fire Monday.
"When we arrived we saw someone hanging out the window, covered in soot, on the fire floor," Rescue 5 firefighter Ronald Mitchell said in a statement.
Mitchell made his way through the clutter-filled sixth floor apartment to the man.
"I crawled on the ground to find the room where the patient was, and saw firefighter Michael Luongo by the window on the aerial ladder. I told the patient that it’s going to be ok."
With the man in and out of consciousness, they decided to use a litter to bring the man down the aerial ladder.
Luongo, assigned to Engine 160, said they recently trained on a similar situation.
“We actually drilled on this exact same situation earlier this week with Rescue 5," he said.
"When I got to the window, I saw firefighter Mitchell behind the patient, making sure the patient wasn’t going to jump or fall off. He kept the patient calm the whole time,"
Luongo secured the patient to the Stokes basket and brought him down the aerial ladder to EMS crews.
The man is listed in serious condition.
