Wildland Firefighting: Situation Awareness and Mutual Aid from Firehouse World

July 8, 2009

Three veteran wildland firefighters discuss a variety of topics, including situation awareness for the urban/wildland fire crews and the challenges brought on my mutual aid units. Guests include Quinn MacLeod, retired from the Parker Fire Protection District in Colorado and retired Los Angeles City Fire Department Battalion Chiefs Patrick Shanley and Don Stuckey. The podcast starts with a discussion on what constitutes a "Red Flag" day in California and how this can fall into each firefighter's size-up for their shift. They expand on size-up and cover a variety the key points for situation awareness in this environment. The panel reviews mutual aid policies and talks about the variety of challenges when a large number of outside agencies are brought to the scene, including communications and the need for a good working knowledge of the surrounding geography. Note: This podcast was recorded at Firehouse World in February. Please send any questions or comments to: [email protected].
