Embry-Riddle to Offer Bachelor of Science in Fire Science

Nov. 18, 2010

Daytona Beach, Fla., Nov. 18, 2010 – Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Worldwide will be offering the Bachelor of Science in Fire Science beginning January 2011. The program is based on the curriculum developed by the National Fire Academy’s Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education project and was previously only available through a select few universities. This degree meets all criteria set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. The recognized program will be offered fully online initially and may be later offered in major markets.

The program is primarily designed for fire and emergency services personnel who have already earned the associate’s degree. Offering the program entirely online allows students to attain the four-year degree while maintaining their daily routine and employment. Program faculty will be drawn from active chief officers around the country who have both graduate degrees and on-the-job experience.

“This program is ideal for members of the emergency services profession who have the goal of becoming leaders in their field,” said Dr. Ron Thomas, Program Chair for Fire Science at Embry-Riddle Worldwide. He added, “We are very proud of this program. It is one of the first programs in the United States leading to a Bachelor’s degree specifically in Fire Science.”

Embry-Riddle Worldwide is a recognized leader in higher education and has many years of experience in awarding credit for certified training. The university also maintains a long-standing partnership with the U.S armed forces, and military firefighters will be able to participate in the new degree program.

The fire science core in the Embry-Riddle Worldwide program is comprised of 39 credit hours which leaves open 21 credit hours that may be used for

completing general education requirements or completing courses from one of Embry-Riddle Worldwide’s other related programs such as Homeland Security, Safety Science, Global Security and Intelligence Studies, or Emergency Management. The program offers two options, one with an aviation emphasis and one without.
