Firefighters to Summit Mount Elbrus to Conquer Childhood Cancers

Aug. 17, 2012

At the end of this month, two members of California’s Riverside Fire Department will summit Russia’s Mount Elbrus to Conquer Kids’ Cancer. Division Chief David Lesh and firefighter Matt Mathis will join the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s third annual Climb for Five team, whose goal is to summit the highest peaks on each of the continents while raising funds for St. Baldrick’s. David and Matt will join Climb for Five seasoned climbers Patrick McCarrick, Jon Koot and Eric Larsen.

The team plans to complete the 18,510 foot climb in 11 days in honor and memory of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s five 2012 Ambassador Kids. Here is a great video about the group and please check out their Facebook page.

David also has a very personal reason for this climb; his four-year-old grandson, Jacob, is currently battling cancer.
