Sept. 26--FAIRVIEW TOWNSHIP, York County -- Like many fire departments a York County Fire Department is facing tough economic times. The Lewisberry Volunteer Fire Department is looking at a takeover by the Fairview Township Fire Department.

The Lewisberry Volunteer Fire Department has been operating in York County since the early 1700's, but recently the department has been responding only to about one fire call every five years.

Fairview Township supervisors pass a motion Monday night to takeover fire rescue services in Lewisberry for the time being. Something that in a tough economy, is becoming a trend in Pennsylvania.

Rob Brady with Local Government Services is helping the two work together. " You're doing nothing unusual. It really is the future as to what 's going on in Pennsylvania. More and more municipalities are looking at sharing services and providing services in a more cost effective manner," says Brady.

Fairview Township supervisors say firefighters from Lewisberry are welcome to join their fire company. A final vote on the takeover isn't expected until December.
