Sept. 08--The former Mount Vernon fire chief is accused of tampering with emergency-medical-service training records to receive nearly $5,200 in extra wages over 2 1/2 years.

Shawn T. Christy, 39, was indicted by a Knox County grand jury yesterday on 19 counts, including two third-degree felony counts of theft in office. He also faces 10 counts of tampering with records, all third-degree felonies; two fifth-degree felony counts of forgery; and five misdemeanor counts of falsification.

The indictment alleges that thefts began in January 2009 and continued until Aug. 26 of this year.

Christy is accused of tampering with training records to make it appear as if he were complying with paramedic continuing-education requirements in November 2008, April 2009, May 2010, July 2010 and March 2011. Prosecutors said he also forged the signature of a former EMS training coordinator on a training certificate.

Christy resigned on Aug. 19.

Third-degree felonies can carry five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
