N.C. Station Burglarized While Firefighters Sleep

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. --

About $2,800 worth of items were stolen from the East Lincoln Fire Department early Sunday morning, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said.

A firefighter came to the fire station at about 7 a.m. Sunday and found the front door propped open and a number of items missing, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Several firefighters were asleep in the station’s sleeping quarters, investigators said.

The thieves took two computer CPUs, one computer monitor, two flat-screen TVs, a DirecTV control box and a cooler full of soft drinks and snacks that belonged to an instructor of a continuing education class for electricians that was held over the weekend.

Firefighters were sent out on a call at about 1 a.m. Sunday and returned to the station at about 2 a.m. They watched TV for a little while and then went to bed, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

A neighbor told investigators he was woken up at about 2:30 a.m. and looked out the window. He said he saw a white or light-colored SUV pulling through his driveway.

Investigators said they were able to get tire impressions from the vehicle.

Anyone with information about the break-in is asked to call the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office at 704-732-9050.
