BOSTON --
Overcrowding shut down a Stuart Street nightclub on New Year's Eve.
Officers responded to Rise Club about 11:40 p.m. for reports of a dangerously large crowd and line extending all the way to Arlington and Columbus streets.
Police said officers also observed a number of barriers that had been set up on the sidewalk without proper consent. Authorities said the barriers were creating unsafe walking conditions.
When police went inside to talk to employees, officers said they estimated more than 800 patrons. Detectives later learned that the club was permitted for 292 patrons.
Police said in an effort to safely evacuate and disperse the large crowd, additional units and the Boston Fire Department were called.
Authorities said officers also observed about 50 underage patrons who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
Police said a check of the club's permits showed a Boston Fire Department permit and an Inspectional Certificate were both expired. Authorities said the club's fire permit was seized.
Fire officials said they observed several hazards, including exposed wires, exposed outlets and flammable decorations hanging from ceilings.
Police said the owners of the club would be charged with violating conditions of their fire permit. Authorities said no arrests were made in connection with the underage drinking, but authorities were looking to cite the club.
