SHAWNEE, Kan.
--
Shawnee teen Shelby Schiraldi lives near where firefighter John Glaser died fighting a house fire Saturday night.
The loss pained her and she knew she needed to do something to help Glaser's family. The 17-year-old settled on the idea of an old-fashioned lemonade stand to benefit the Glaser memorial fund.
With the help of her sister and friends, Shelby began the lemonade stand on Tuesday. The totals steadily piled up until she had raised $6,086 as of Thursday, which is also the day in which Glaser was laid to rest. One man gave 10 $100 bills.
"i was thinking how terrible it'd be to grow up without a father and hard it would be and I wanted to help the family as much as I could," Shelby said.
She had hoped to raise just a few hundred bucks. She raised more money than that and touched a lot of hearts during a tragic time.
The lemonade stand closed for good at 4 p.m. Thursday. The leftover lemonade, cookies, cupcakes, and brownies were given to the workers tearing down the home where the fire occurred.
