Omaha Mulls Allowing Dept. to 'Outsource' Work
OMAHA, Neb. --
Councilwoman Jean Stothert said Tuesday that she doesn't seek to privatize the Omaha Fire Department.
Stothert and Councilman Franklin Thompson want to give the department the authority to enter into private contracts.
In a private hearing, Stothert said the plan only seeks to give the department the same leeway other departments have -- to strike deals, when appropriate, for outsourcing work. In such cases, the deal would have to be less than $20,000.
The firefighter's union opposes the idea.
