BOSTON --
The treasurer of the Norwell Firefighters Union was arrested at a Connecticut casino and is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the union's checking account.
Norwell Fire Chief Andrew Reardon called police Thursday after the union president was notified by Citizens Bank regarding an overdraft. The president said the account should have had more than $40,000.
Members of the Firefighters Union called the treasurer, Truong Nguyen, 35, of Quincy, regarding the missing money. Nguyen said he would bring the books and bank statements in on Saturday, according to officials.
Firefighters gave Norwell detectives 24 canceled checks that they said were made out by and cashed by Nguyen. The transactions started in October 2009, and the last check cashed was this month. The missing money totaled more than $46,000 and completely depleted the account, they said.
Nguyen did not respond to calls and did not return to work. Detectives obtained a warrant for Nguyen on suspicion of embezzlement, a five-year felony.
Detectives received information that Nguyen was at Foxwoods in Connecticut gambling. Detectives contacted the Connecticut State Police office at Foxwoods and advised them of the warrant.
Nguyen was placed under arrest on Monday at the casino and is being held in Connecticut awaiting extradition back to Massachusetts.
