NORWICH, Conn. --
The fire chief at the Occum Volunteer Fire Department in Norwich resigned after officials discovered he misused money.
According to officials, $27,000 was used on items such as stickers, pencils, magnets and lollipops to promote fire safety.
Meanwhile, the fire department is in desperate need of a new boiler, which would have only cost $13,000.
City Comptroller Joseph Ruffo said when an audit was conducted and the misuse of finances was discovered, Chief Robert Rylie was very apologetic and said he should not have used to money in that way.
One firefighter who didn't want to reveal his identity said the whole situation is an embarrassment.
For now, the department will be run by the deputy fire chief.
