Round #6 AFG Awards Announced

Nearly $24 million and 200 grants awarded to fire departments throughout the United States in round #6 of the Assistance To Firefighters Grants Program.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced today $23,929,224 in direct assistance grants to 200 fire departments and first responder organizations through the department's Fiscal Year (FY) 2006 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. Additional phases will soon be announced that will total $485 million in FY06 AFG awards to nearly 5,000 fire-related organizations nationwide.

Announcements are planned for every Friday through the end of the year at approximately 6 a.m. There are approximately 5,000 grants worth $485-490 million to be awarded.

The AFG is a competitive program administered by the DHS Office of Grants and Training that awards one-year grants directly to fire departments nationwide in an effort to give every department the basic tools needed to respond to all hazards.

The AFG application solicitation period closed in April, and peer reviewers from various fire service organizations evaluated and ranked the 18,160 applications several weeks later.

Grants can also be viewed at the Homeland Security Grant Program Web site.
