EDWARDSVILLE -- The boroughs fire department will soon be receiving new equipment from a federal grant.

Council members said at Thursday nights meeting the borough received a $78,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency grant. The money will be used to purchase 45 pagers, eight portable radios, a new air compressor and 10 sets of bunker gear.

The total cost of the equipment will be about $88,000, but the Firemans Relief Association said it will cover the difference.

In other business, council:

Hired Matthew Bonawits as a part-time police officer at $9.75 per hour. Bonawits is also employed as a part-time officer in Larksville and Forty Fort.

Said council members John Sedeski and Linda Zaneski will participate in a Pennsylvania Innovations in Government essay contest. Zaneski said seven or eight winners will be chosen and the winning boroughs will each receive a $100,000 award.

Its a long shot. But you dont know unless you try.

Will spend $1,750 to repair the boroughs 1998 street department truck.

Sedeski also said the borough should consider purchasing a new snowplow truck later this year. The borough usually replaces them every six years and expects a new truck to cost about $30,000.

Warned residents that the police department will begin ticketing abandoned and run-down vehicles and towing them from public and private property.

Councilman Luke Sowcik said if the vehicle is being restored, the owner can apply for a permit. Otherwise it will be in violation if it does not have current registration or an inspection sticker or is unable to move under its own power.
