WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP - Township voters defeated a $2.26 million fire budget carrying a 1-cent increase in the fire district tax rate by a vote of 104-166.

The budget included two new paid firefighters and allows six paid firefighters per shift. Four would man the fire truck while two would serve as first-aid personnel.

Fire officials said adding firefighters would save money because the district would spend less replacing firefighters who are sick or on vacation.
