Detroit's bravest are getting new gear, thanks in part to a federal grant awarded to the city.
Firefighters began picking up turnout coats and pants from the apparatus division on Wednesday, according to The Detroit News.
The new equipment was purchased with a $1.75 million AFG grant and $965,000 in matching funds from the city.
The fire department received 645 sets of gear this week and expects to receive 342 more -- along with boots, gloves and hoods -- within the coming weeks.
"It's a great thing for members of this department," Fire Commissioner Donald Austin told the newspaper. "That's been one of the major complaints. Turnout gear is fundamental to doing our jobs."
The recently released documentary, "Burn," showed firefighters duct-taping their boots before running into a fire.
