Aug. 28--A former Remington Volunteer Fire Department president on Tuesday pleaded guilty to stealing more than $40,000 from the department.
According to a news release from the FBI, 52-year-old William Joseph Stuart of Bealeton accepted the plea agreement in Alexandria's United States District Court. In the agreement, Stuart admitted that between September 2008 and April 2009 he stole department funds by "submitting false and fraudulent invoices" to the fire department. He then wrote checks to himself.
Stuart faces up to a 10-year sentence for the crime. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 15.
The FBI and the Internal Revenue Service handled the investigation.
Stuart was originally indicted in July, along with former Remington Volunteer Fire and Rescue Chief Douglas "Bo" Taylor, 52, who was not mentioned in Tuesday's release.
In July, according to a U.S. Attorney's Office release, Taylor was indicted by a federal grand jury on eight counts of theft, wire fraud and filing false income tax returns.
Taylor was the Fauquier County station's fire and rescue chief from 1994 to 2011.
