Conn. Firefighter Charged With Starting Dumpster Fire

Aug. 20--SOUTHINGTON -- A volunteer firefighter was charged Wednesday with starting a fire in a Dumpster on Queen Street in June, police said.
Christopher Newman, 24, of Bristol, turned himself in Wednesday morning after a warrant for his arrest was issued charging with reckless burning and second-degree criminal mischief, according to police.
Police said he lit the contents of a Dumpster near Raya Clinic and Mad Hatter Car Wash on fire the evening of June 2, police said.
"Southington Fire Department is disappointed that a volunteer probationary firefighter has been charged with reckless burning and criminal mischief second-degree," Southington Fire Chief Harold Clark said in a statement. "The Southington Fire Department understands that no one has been convicted of any crime. The Department would like to stress that this incident is in no way representative of the dedicated job that all of our firefighters do every day for the Town of Southington."
He was released from police custody and will appear in court on Sept. 2.
