Fire Damages Mass. Chief's Home

The Rockport assistant chief's home suffered extensive smoke damage.

ROCKPORT -- Thanks to a neighbor out walking his dog, a fire at the home of a town fire official was knocked down right away, according to Rockport fire Chief Jim Doyle.

The two-alarm blaze at 2 Meadow Road was called in as a structure fire by retired state police Lt. Al Thompson, Doyle said.

"It was a good fire, we knocked it down quickly," said Doyle. The home is owned by John and Kathy Porter. John Porter is one of Rockport's assistant fire chiefs.

Doyle, on Tuesday morning, thought the fire began in the kitchen, but said the official cause was still to be determined until the state fire marshal inspected the property that night or Wednesday morning.

There were no reports of any injuries, but firefighters at the scene had given the call to "open the roof" of the five-bedroom 2,700-square-foot house, which dates to 1946, according to online real estate records. Firefighters cut a hole in the roof with a chain saw to vent smoke.

The home, which is assessed by the town at $260,700, sustained smoke damage throughout, Doyle said.

Gloucester firefighters responded to the scene and to Rockport's central fire station to provide additional coverage for the blaze, which broke out at around 9:30 a.m.
