Ester Appointed Interim San Diego Fire Chief

April 11, 2018
Kevin Ester has been with San Diego Fire-Rescue for nearly 33 years and was most recently an assistant chief.

San Diego's City Council appointed San Diego Fire-Rescue veteran Kevin Ester as interim fire chief.

Ester, who served as the department's assistant chief of business operations, replaced Brian Fennessy, who left to become fire chief in Orange County.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer's appointment was confirmed with an 8-0 vote Tuesday night, according to radio station KPBS. One council member was absent.

Interim chief is Ester's latest role in his nearly 33-year career with the department, rising from the rank of firefighter to his appointment as assistant chief in 2016. His latest duties included oversight of the city's emergency command center, logistics, community risk reduction and human resources.
