Search efforts are under way to find an Arizona fire chief who went missing while on a multi-day hike.

Pine-Strawberry Fire District Chief Gary Morris set out on a four-day, 51-mile hike of the Arizona Trail, "one of typical 'alone time' hikes" that he enjoyed, according to the district. He said he would call to be picked up when he finished.

"His last communication expressed that he was on schedule for his pick-up," the district stated in an online update posted late Tuesday. "He indicated that he would call when he made it to the end of the trail. He has not called and efforts to reach him have not been successful."

So far, it has been more than 24 hours since he was scheduled to end his hike. Gila County agencies, such as Tonto Search and Rescue, have been dispatched to search for Morris.
