Pine-Strawberry Fire District Chief Gary Morris texted a search and rescue official, and he eventually was found by a helicopter, which airlifted him from his location.

An Arizona fire chief who was reported missing while on a four-day hike was found Wednesday.

Pine-Strawberry Fire District Chief Gary Morris, 73, texted a message to a Gila County Search and Rescue coordinator at around 3 p.m., The Arizona Republic reports. Morris then was told to call 9-1-1 so dispatchers could zero in on his phone's GPS and track his location.

An Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter eventually found Morris, and he was taken to Payson Airport. No details were released about his condition.

Morris had set out on a four-day, 51-mile hike of the Arizona Trail, "one of typical 'alone time' hikes" that he enjoyed, according to the district. He said he would call to be picked up when he finished.

But Morris didn't contact his pick-up, and search efforts were mobilized to locate him. It wasn't clear when he started his hike or was last seen.
