CANTON, OH - Fire Chief Thomas Garra has announced he will retire March 2 after 29 years of service.

During his time with the city, Garra has served not only as chief but also as a firefighter/paramedic, a captain and battalion chief.

He called his work a privilege in a news release, adding that it was "one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences imaginable."

"Over the thousands of emergency responses, God has constantly reminded me that life is so brief, and the human existence is so fragile. So, it is only by the grace of God that I went from food stamps, unemployment and welfare to my current position," he said.

The news release also includes a Bible verse, 1 Timothy 1: 15-17.
